EXPLORING SPORTS CULTURE AMONG INSTITUT LATIHAN KEMAHIRAN BELIA DAN SUKAN (ILKBS) STUDENTS OF THE MINISTRY OF YOUTH AND SPORTS: A SOCIOCULTURAL PERSPECTIVE
Abstract
The sports culture of students at Institut Latihan Kemahiran Belia dan Sukan (ILKBS) is examined in this qualitative study. Based on a sociocultural theoretical framework, the study investigates how peer pressure, institutional identity, and national youth development values impact students' attitudes, behaviours, and involvement in sports. Twelve groups of ILKBS students from three campuses participated in semi-structured interviews and focus groups to gather data. The NVivo 12 program was used to perform the thematic analysis. Institutional Sports Identity, Peer and Community Influence, Sports as Character Building, and Barriers to Active Participation were the four main themes that surfaced.
Results show that sports are a vital social and pedagogical tool for forming students' personalities and identities. But there are still issues with gender inequality, structural constraints, and conflicting academic goals. The study concludes that developing a sustainable sports culture at ILKBS calls for all-encompassing assistance that strikes a balance between inclusive participation, peer-driven motivation, and institutional policies.
